Air quality in the Pittsburgh Region has dramatically improved over the past 60 years, but concerns still exist about less visible types of pollution, specifically particulate matter and ozone. These pollutants are caused by both local emission sources and by sources in upwind states.

Many still think of Pittsburgh as a dirty, smoky mill town, but most of the major pollution still lurks around the rivers and mines.  This map compares 2008 Mine Yields to the 2008 average Air Quality indexes.  Rates of particulate matter are of high concern.

Pittsburgh to host World Environment Day on June 5

On October 15, 2009, the United Nations Environment Programme announced the selection of Pittsburgh as the North American Host City for World Environment Day on June 5, 2010. Building on the success of The G-20 Pittsburgh Summit in September, the selection of Pittsburgh reaffirms the region's place as a thought leader in regional innovation and transformation.
