The number of arts and cultural establishments per 100,000 residents in the Pittsburgh Metropolitan Statistical Area increased from 13.53 in 2013 to 13.7 in 2014. The 2014 total was slightly below the benchmark average of 16.84.
Cultural establishments include a broad array of organizations beyond more narrowly defined “arts” groups, including zoos and nature parks. The total count in the data below is the sum of the following types of establishments: theaters, dance companies, musical groups and artists, other performing arts, museums, historical sites, zoos and botanical gardens, nature parks, fine arts schools, independent artists, writers and performers, art dealers. These data are from the U.S. Census Bureau’s County Business Patterns and are updated annually.
