Housing Appreciation Rates

In the second quarter of 2020, housing prices in the Pittsburgh Metropolitan Statistical Area appreciated at a rate of 3.9 percent compared to the same time period a year earlier, the ninth-highest rate among Pittsburgh Today benchmark regions and below the average of 4.0 percent.

Austin led the pack with an appreciation rate of 5.3 percent over the year.

Compared to five years earlier, housing prices in the Pittsburgh region appreciated at a rate of 24 percent. Compared to 2010, prices rose by 40 percent. Since 2000, prices have appreciated by 91 percent.

Rates are calculated by subtracting the Percentage Change in OFHEO Housing Price Index from previous quarters (1, 5, 10 and 20 years ago) from the percent change in the most recent quarter. The difference is then divided by the previous quarter’s percent change and multiplied by 100.
