New Building Permits – Benchmark Regions

The number of permits issued for new privately owned residential construction is an excellent indicator of growth and economic vitality.

After years of declining building permits that began in 2006, Pittsburgh’s trend has slowly improved. From 2011 to 2013, building permits increased by 1,649 units. In 2014, permits declined by 373, and then rose by 1,074 in 2015 . However, the number of building permits began to slide in 2016 with a decrease of 861 new building permits compared to 2015. This trend continued in 2017 with 75 fewer building permits than 2016.
