Crime rates in the Pittsburgh MSA tend to be lower than those in most of our benchmark regions.

In 2015, the Pittsburgh MSA ranked as the safest metro area among the benchmark peers with a low overall crime rate of 2,049.2 per 100,000 residents. Pittsburgh also experienced the lowest rates of forcible rape, burglary and motor vehicle theft among all benchmark regions.

The Boston, Charlotte and Cleveland MSAs were excluded from the 2015 FBI Crime in the United States by Metropolitan Statistical Area report. Additionally, data were not reported for the all crimes, burglary and larcenty-theft measures in the Denver MSA.
